Julie Smith, the founder of SEE NYC, created the app to share her love for taking pictures of the City with the world. She was kind enough to answer some questions for us.
What is SEE NYC and who is it for?
SEE NYC is for “photography tourists” visiting New York City. It gives you exact locations to not so well known and known locations to shoot awesome New York city-centric pictures. It also includes recommendations for times of the day to shoot and which lenses work best.
How and when did you come up with the idea to make an app?
Friends and colleagues were constantly asking “where did you take that picture”. And I recognized it would take people some time to figure out where all of these locations are if they are just visiting for a short time. So many amateur photographers visit the city every year, this would make it easy to get to those locations and plan around it.
How easy was to make the app using ShoutEm?
The choice of templates are great and the UI in the admin panel is intuitive making it easy to upload your content and make any changes necessary.
What planning and preparation did you make before going into the process of making an app?
It took a few months of going back to every location during ideal light to get new images for the app.
What are the main features included in your app?
Location addresses, time of day recommendations and suggestions on what types of lenses would work best for each scene.
Why is the combination of mobile and local a win-win combination these days?
This is a mobile/local app that really could not work any other way.
What advice would you give to people who are planning to make an app?
Research and planning. Research your market and what other apps are out there and see what you can do to improve on those or find a niche in that market.
